SkyCaddie SG5 Golf GPS (Black) (Sports) I was one of their early adopters (way before USGA and R&A made them legal) and had their original SkyCaddie. Back then, it was a technological breakthrough and I benefitted (and my buddies) on the course. And last year I started my quest to find the latest golf GPS. Of course, the first place to look was at SkyCaddie. SG5 was their first color display, improved GPS reception, bigger display…but nothing really new in terms of features. I guess they figured they had the market cornered as their competition was range finders. Meanwhile, I was starting to get tired of their limitations such as I can only load 10 courses at a time, their customer service (or lack of) and their annual membership. However, while they sat on their rear, this product sector evolved and other competitors jumped in. This year there are whole suite of new GPS with next generation features. I looked at uPro Golf (now owned by Callaway). Cool flyby like what you see on TV, but noticed from other users that it had several common issues mostly with their display and battery life. So my search continued. I then looked at OnPar Golf. It looked like my iPhone with the similar touchscreen and icons. That UI works for iPhone, but not for golf GPS. Then I looked at Bushnell Yardage Pro XCG. I thought this was it. It had everything I wanted, no major issues mentioned by other users/reviewers. One of my buddies bought one and I had a hands-on experience on a course. I was actually one click away from owning it (from Amazon, of course) and I decided to make one last google…and then I found Garmin’s Approach G5 unit. Yup, it’s most expensive GPS unit but it’s made by Garmin, the GPS expert. I’ve been very happy with their Nuvi GPS units. They currently have 9,400+ courses and they’re FREE. NO ANNUAL MEMBERSHIPS! You simply download new courses from their web site and you can load all those courses on your unit so no more shuffling courses onto my unit. Best of all, it’s waterproof! Unlike Skycaddie, you’re not limited to the 40-targets on each hole (though,I typically only see a handful). You just drag a circle with your finger on a birds-eye-view and it will tell you how far you are to that. It also keeps scores up to 4 and you can download it to your PC afterwards. I also like that you use batteries instead of rechargeable. I lost count of time I forgot to charge my SkyCaddie and when my buddies call me last minutes I couldn’t use it the whole round. Now, I just keep spare batteries in my bag. So, the bottom line is before you consider SkyCaddie units, research the other GPS models before plunking down your hard earned money. I’m confident that you’ll find one with much better features for a similar price. If you’re interested in the Garmin G5, there are ton of videos on YouTube so check them out! If money is not an option, then definitely go with Garmin Approach G5. Otherwise, the Bushnell Yardage Pro XCG is your best bet. Also, for those that own iPhone 3G/3GS there are quite a few apps you can use to make your iPhone into Golf GPS. I’ve been tinkering with Golfshot (the $29.99 version. Don’t bother with their 99 cent version) and I have to say it’s damn good app. It even comes with statistical report so you know which part of your game you should be working on. But I’m sticking with my Garmin G5, because the Golfshot depletes my iPhone battery like crazy. My iPhone is not rugged and waterproof either so I’ll use it as my backup, but not as my main golf GPS.

SkyCaddie SG5 Golf GPS (Black) (Sports) I’ll admit it…I tried a cheaper product made by Garmin. It locked up every three or four rounds. After trying three units I gave up and bought the SG5. It works great. The color screen is very easy to read in the sun. The charge lasts longer than I expected, usually three full rounds at least. My only complaint is that it’s a little bigger than some of it’s competitors. You can’t slip it into your pocket to take a swing. But I’ve used it for six months and it’s performed flawlessly. If you are thinking of saving a little money, I would not recommend any of the models with black and white screens (SG2.5, SG3, SG4). They are very hard to read in the sun; you have to constantly rotate the screen around to catch just the right angle. Although it lacks the features of the higher models, the SG2, with it’s black-on-green screen, is easier to read. If you are thinking of buying anything but the SG5, I’d strongly recommend that you find someone who has the model you’re considering, and check out the screen in the bright sunlight.

Golf Buddy World Platinum GPS Range Finder (Sports) I am perfectly happy with this device. I got nearly everything I want in a golf gps. I was initially unhappy with it when I first got it because the preinstalled maps were bare bones and not the ones shown in the picture–until I found out all I had to do was install the manager program on my computer, connect the golf gps to the computer, update the courses and firmware. And ‘Oh Yeah’. Of course Golf Buddy lists all the courses they mapped on their web site for everyone to see. Hard to complain. I used it for a few rounds this year and measured my club distances accurately for the first time. Except for the battery, the device can be continuously improved for free by just connecting it to the computer and updating it, and this might be one of the golf buddy world platinum gps’s most distinguishing features.

Golf Buddy World Platinum GPS Range Finder (Sports) I used this product for 5 straight days. The battery life is limited. I was able to play 24 holes out of the 36 on the same day before the unit turned off (I gave it a full charge every night). Of the seven courses played in Michigan only 3 had the full hole view. All other courses were a picture of the green with yardages. I was disappointed that most courses I played only showed the hole view with limited course targets. Many holes had no targets listed as I stood there looking at sand traps and water. You can add targets, but when I play a course on vacation I wold not add targets. When the hole view worked, it was fun and helpful.

SkyCaddie SGX Golf GPS (Sports) I waited for about a week from release to order the SGX skycaddie from Amazon. The negative review on synching with windows worried me. After reading the user comment I went ahead and ordered the unit figuring that, if it didn’t work I could always return it to Amazon. I had no problems synching it, and it downloaded the courses I selected without any problems. It is very important to note that Quick Vue does not work with SGX, only Hole Vue does. I didn’t realize this and wondered why he courses I play did not show the hole view. It turns out only two of them were listed as having Hole Vue. If this is important you need to check on the skygolf website to make sure that your courses are mapped for Hole Vue. I believe this will get resolved soon as they get their mapping up to date. On the course, I found the ranges accurate which are what this rangefinder is really about and is the reason I did not get any of the satellite mapped rangefinders. The controls consist of three small keys, which might be a little too small for people with big fingers and also have a tad of a learning curve to get to use them properly. There is a button/joystick to navigate the cursor around. It does double duty as selection button when you press on it; this may cause problems for some but there is a workaround in the settings menu, where you can disable the select function from the joystick and just use the right key for that. Two additional small buttons on either side of the joystick serve to take you out of golf menus and into your scorecard. There are two larger buttons at the bottom corners: The left one (with a ball logo) is used to mark your ball position to use the stroke distance measurement. You hit the button where you hit the ball from and when you get to the ball the display shows (in numbers that are too small and easy to miss) the distance to the spot you hit from. (Note that the manual is wrong and you should not hit the ball button again.) The right one with a flag takes you to the green view. You have a choice to have your unit keep your score for you. It will also track number of fairways hit and how you miss them, as well as number of putts per hole. It will keep 10 scorecards in memory and synch them to your account in SkyGolf, which is rather neat. The biggest negative for me is the learning curve. It takes a while to learn all the features and how to use them. All in all, I like the unit and recommend it. I may edit this after I have a chance to play with it some more.

SkyCaddie SGX Golf GPS (Sports) I recently purchased the SGX and like most people had a problem trying to register the product. When I tried to sync on my computer with Windows 7 and 64 bit, I never did get it to sync, so I took it to office and was able to work on my XP machine. The have a temporary fix for Windows 7, but real fix will come shortly. As far as use and ease of use, this is the best GPS I have had and I have had a previous sky caddie and most recently a upro. What I like best is the clearity of the screen and how fast it reads the yardage. As with any product brand new on the market, there are normally a few bugs, but this product is worth the hassle. I would have given it 5 stars if it did not have the sync problems.

Bosch GCM12SD 120-Volt 12-Inch DB Glide Miter Saw (Tools & Home Improvement) Just picked this saw up from Tool King. they shipped it right away and I got the tool days before the earliest expected delivery date…took just 4 working days. Very heavy saw if you plan to cart it to and use it on job sites which I do. Man the gliding action is sweet. none of the typical resistance from the rod saws I’ve owned and I’ve about owned them all. I have the latest Ridgid and Dewalt 12″ crosscut saws now and had their previous evolutions as well as the Milwaulke, Makita and Bosch cosscuts. The high up motor is the first thing that smacks at you…ugly and in your cheek when you carry this beast, and it shoulda come with a lazer (even tho I have never used one) and a quick release material clamp…where’s that? For the money all the bells and whistles shoulda been there IMO. Here’s what I see as this saws greatest flaw…The advertised baseboard against the fence height of 6+ inches is ONLY WITH THE BASEBOARD (or other material) ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SAW BLADE !! Turn the table to the right at 45 deg and the bottom of the belt/spindle housing is the highest a piece of wood can be (4.5 inches). When the saw is pushed back against the fence (or used as a chop saw) the housing is almost touching the fence (at 45 deg right)…The tallest piece of 3/4 inch thick material against the fence cannot be any more than 4 1/2 inches tall to the right sided of the blade. Very very disappointing! The manual tells you specifically : Manual page 38: “This saw can miter cut 6-1/2 tall base boards verically positioned against the fence at any angle from 0-52 deg. All angled cuts must be made with the base board placed on the left side of the table. for certain cuts, the base boaard will have to be flipped upside down or placed with the face side against the fence”… So any baseboard taller than 4.5 inches must be cut on the left side of the blade and that any miters other than at the right end of a board must be turned/flipped to have the finished side (long point of the miter)facing the fence…like who’s gonna cut a finished piece of wood that way with all the splintered rip outs?? Yea right…use a sacrificial fence board (is what the manual says)or lay the piece on the table and use the bevel angle with the crosscut feature…not this finish carpenter! I cut alot of prefinished molding for kitchen work and (e.g.)the typical MTT molding that WoodMode offers for crown detail, which is 6″ tall, can only be crosscut on the table with this saw. My Dewalt clears the same molding left and right of the blade, and the Ridgid can cut it if I rip it to 5 inches first. How many of us have an 8 foot piece of tall trim we want to chop cut somewhere close to the middle at 45 deg right miter? how about a 3 foot piece somewhere close to the middle? This saw won’t cut it if it’s over 4.5 inches tall 
Update 12-19-2010: have had more time using this saw and am convinced I would not have bought it if I had had experience with it. As a Kitchen remodeler, I install ALOT of cabinet mouldings. As I stated earlier, one of the upper crown detail moldings I quite freguently install is an L shapped facia between the cabinets and ceiling which measures 3″ wide at the bottom by 6″ tall. Crown is then applied to this. Since this saw can only cut a miter on the right end of mouldings taller than 4 1/2″ when set against the fence vertically, I am forced to use the crosscut option laying taller mouldings flat on the table for the other end’s miter cut. BUT, this saw when layed over to the right side at 45 degrees. ONLY ALLOWS A CUT HEIGHT OF 1 1/2″. I cannot even cut one of the most common crown detail mouldings used even when using the crosscut option with the saw bevel layed to the right side at 45 degrees. In short, the 45 degree right side bevel crosscut allowance of this saw is only designed to cut a piece of 2x lumber (1 1/2″ thick) The idea of the hinged arms on this saw and the upfront bevel controls is outstanding, but the practical everyday use of this saw’s capabilities is less than a cheap Firestorm chop box I would NOT recommend this saw for anything other than for framing purposes.

Bosch GCM12SD 120-Volt 12-Inch DB Glide Miter Saw (Tools & Home Improvement) i just had to buy one 2 weeks ago and had high hopes it would be better than the 4 yr old makita 12 ” slider i am currently using in my custom cab shop. mistake . it was not. could not get it to cut sq. ….there is so much play in the arm and flex in the turn table i had to call bosch tech to try to understand why. the table was not flat across from left to right as well. got the run around from bosch and was told it was within their tolerance specs and that the saw was not really designed for precision cabinet work. ???? i boxed it up and sent it back pronto. was very disappointed that bosch did not want to help in the least. i have now bit the bullet and ordered a kapex in the hopes that it will be a step up from my makita which is getting a little tired. i was suprised that as tired as it is it still cut better than the new bosch glider. and the dust collection on the bosch is a joke. my bench and surrounding area were covered after a few dozen cuts in a 3×6 trying to square this saw up. DO NOT BUY THIS SAW unless you are framing houses or other rough work. it might work for that.to heavy to lug aroud a job site. i am disappointed in bosch service and i have 8 of there routers and 6 drills which have worked great. but not this new glider. it is just to flexable in the head and table. i was also suprised and disappointed that it was made in china, blade and all. for me i try to buy american made when i can or at least from places that have a fair living wage etc. the bosch has a miter clearance pblm as well. there is a insert in the manual explaining the miter set up that could cause the saw to come in contact with the fence. obviously a problem they found out about after the fact. they will probably address it on the next version of the saw. i too was impressed when i first tried the glider; but not after a week of use. just my opinion and findings. everyone demands different uses and accuracy from their tools. the bosch just did not cut it for me. just a note: ps. amazon gets 5 stars. they are a class outfit and stand behind what they sell. i will continue to buy from them !!! GREAT customer service !! This is posted in my comment section, but i thought i would bring it forward as it compares the bosch (which i owned VERY briefly) and the kapex and makita i now own…..it may be of help or not to someone. i posted this earlier, but thought i would repeat it here as well. having used both the bosch and now a kapex following are some observations. The kapex is a good saw and so far it is working great for my furniture needs. Time will tell. The saw out of the box cut true and square and had none of the flex that the bosch had. I had an issue with the table on the first saw i received ( i am very critical of saws after my bosch incident, and festool sent me a replacement and picked up the one i received from woodcraft…..no hassel and very quickly !! ) i was very impressed with customer service from festool. The handle/saftey switch on the bosch was a little clunky and awkward for me. It is similar to my dewalt ;but a little clunkier imo. The kapex has a vert. handle sim. to my makita, so not hard to adjust to. The lasers,which i did not think i would ever use, are turning out to be very useful and a feature i am glad to have. The one thing i think is far ahead of the bosch and the makita 1214L i have is the head angle adjustment. in my furniture making i use a lot of angles and compound angles in thick hardwoods and repeated accuracy is very critical. the makita is a p.i.t.a. at best and you are never quit sure what exact angle you are on. the bosch is a little better at adjusting the angle although the head seems a bit big and clunky to move; but on the saw i received the table would move slightly/flex every time you would clamp the head down from the front. not good in my work. the kapex has a geared head adjusted from a handle on the front of the right slide. seems smooth and very accurate so far.The forward slide rails are very smooth and have no play what so ever. I think having the slide forward puts the hinging closer to the cut. Seems tighter than my makita, (which is 4 yrs old). For me the hinge mech on the bosch seems to far back and seemed like it had a lot more flex with all the hinge points, especially when the saw was pulled out. the miter/angle tool included with the festool seems great; but i do very little trim work outside of the shop, so not sure if i will ever really use it. If i had to take a saw to the jobsite day after day, the bosch is big and heavy……its a beast and i would not want to lug it around. the kapex is compact and lighter. trim work in a house i would take the kapex. rough framing were the saw could be left…i would take the bosch. BUT my saw never leaves my shop so… weight and compactness,are not issues for me. Accuracy is #1, and so far the kapex seems to be the most accurate saw out there of the ones i have tried, for me. I had both saws hooked up to the same shop vac, and the dust collection was far better on the kapex. Again i have a big dusty shop ..always… so this is not a big issue for me. I have never hooked my saw up to a vac before… maybe i will now… it was kind of nice. don’t let the review above fool you about the bosah cutting capacity. it is not 6.5 ” . included in the manual is a slip of paper that warns of the saw coming in contact with the fence during some comb. miter cuts. the capacity is not more than 4.5 ” on the right. the first review on this forum covers it very well. Price is always an issue; but for me if it works better and is more of a pleasure to use …. every day…. it is well worth it. The kapex is expensive and worth every dime to me. Just a few observations on the 2 saws after limited use. UPDATE ADDED 1 25 2011: Was contacted by bosch main tech saw guy and we talked about the table problems and other concerns i had. He was understanding and explained that their appeared to be a problem with the packing and they were working on a couple solutions. He apologized for the poor customer service i had received . Said we may talk more after they had resolved the issues. not sure what that does ! 3 08 2011 update; I have never heard from bosch again. The box i received had no damage to it at all. it was in perfect shape. 2 ups guys delivered this to my shop. so…. i honestly do not believe this to be a packaging issue, at least not alone. i believe it to be a quality control issue or manufacturing problem. just my belief. i have seen a lot of imported stuff that was great and a lot bad. very inconsistent. if you buy one hope your lucky and get a good one. mine was not…….and by now i have put some time in on my new kapex,……….I have no regreats.

LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon 7965 (Toy) Played with this at a friend’s house. He got it for his birthday and took him more than 5 hours to build, and he wouldn’t let us take it apart to rebuild! It is impressive! The details on the outside is just like the movie. The fold out panels open the reveal the inside where the minifigs can act out the movie scenes. The size of the Falcon is just right to fly around, not too heavy or bulky, and is actually quite sturdy compared to other Lego sets. Absolutely stunning set. This is the one set that I really want this year. My parents say it is okay priced and we can get it for Christmas! Now only 4 months to go!

LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon 7965 (Toy) This is a massive and amazing set. I’m a huge fan of the original trilogy and lego so have been wanting to get a Millennium Falcon set for several years. Unfortunately I found most of them either far to expensive, or simply not worth the asking price. This one finally hit the sweet spot for me. For $139.99 (or cheaper if you buy it on Amazon or find it on sale) you get six minifigures and a 1200+ piece model that is nearly perfect. The first thing that I truly love is that the set is pretty much in scale so that you can place all the figures in familiar settings inside the ship. The roof of the Falcon is made up of folding panels that can be opened to reveal most of the interior of the ship. They’ve included the table where they played virtual chess, Luke’s training droid, as well as control panels and beds. The cockpit is a separate section but still fits a figure (I’ve got Han on pilot duty naturally), and they even managed to work in the dual seat gunners pod and the hidden smugglers compartment. As for the Minifigures, you get Han and Chewie of course, Luke and Ben Kenobi, and Leia and Darth Vader round things out. I would have liked to see R2-D2 and C-3PO included but that’s just a nit pick. Figures come with light sabers for the Jedi and blasters for the rest along with Chewie’s crossbow. The entire set took me about three and a half hours to assemble, which considering I haven’t put together even a small set in years seemed like a pretty quick job. The instructions are very easy to follow with the parts nicely separated out into various numbered bags which I assume is standard Lego practice now. Highly recommend this one if you want a Lego Millennium Falcon. Price is great and the quality is outstanding.

iRobot 560 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, Black and Silver (Kitchen) My wife and I decided to get one of these because our 8 month old son is about to start crawling. While we try and keep our floors clean, our beagle has other thoughts as she sheds all over the place. We went with the latest 560 model as it has just about everything we would want with a product like this. It works as advertised and we will definitley keep it but there are some areas that need improvement. Here is a quick breakdown of the pros and cons Pros 1. Quieter than a standard vaccuum 2. Seems to learn the room dimensions quickly. The virtual walls and lighthouse feature are very nice. 3. Is “smart” enough to avoid getting tangled in our area rugs 4. Obviously easy to use as it is just a push of a button (or even better when you program it) 5. Can use everyday to keep the floors spotless 6. Have successfully used it on hard wood, vinyl, carpet and (accidently) concrete 7. Cleans under furniture which is otherwise a pain to do 8. Entertainment value – keeps the dog and baby interested for a while! Cons (or areas for improvement) 1. Fills up fast – Upon intital cleaning cycles, we had to empty it after about 10 minutes. Further usage proved better as the dust/dog hair was a lot less than before. I suppose this is a good thing as it is picking up dirt that I missed with the regualr vaccum. 2. No warning that it is full. This is the one area that would be a huge improvement. I feel like I need to interrupt it all the time to check if it is full. It would be great if it had some way to gauge how full it is. 3. Battery life – Not sure if I am getting the full specified battery life out of this as it seems to need a recharge after about an hour to an hour and a half (isn’t it supposed to last longer?) 4. Automatic docking is iffy. Several times after it was done cleaning, it wandered around aimlessly looking for the docking station. The “lighthouse” feature didn’t seem to help much. I ended up moving the dock to a more open area and hopefully that will work better. So for my first few days playing with this thing, it seems to do its job rather well with just a few annoyances that really do not affect its ability to clean. We plan on running it once a day to keep the dog hair and dust down to a minimum which will hopefully help our allegies. *****UPDATE: 10/2/2007******* Well, I’ve been using the Roomba now for a couple of weeks. I have it run every other day and here is what I think of it now 1. After letting it clean several times, I find I don’t have to empty it every 10 minutes. I can now clean three rooms (about 900 square feet) without having to empty it. 2. My wife and I both agree that we seem to breathe better in the house now. Maybe it is due to less dust in the house (especially under the couches) or maybe its in our heads. Either way, we are breathing easier. 3. The self docking is now working great. I think my problems in the past were due to the brushes getting too dirty and requiring frequent cleaning (2 or 3 per run). Now, since the floors are cleaner, this has not been a problem and the Roomba finds its way home with no issues. I use the lighthouse settings to clean each room separately and then I guess they help Roomba find its home. Very nice! 4. Battery life doesn’t seem to be a problem. I am getting the stated cleaning times per the manual and it seems to be enough to clean the 3 rooms. 5. The Roomba does require maintenance after each cleaning cycle. This requires emptying the dust bin, removing the brushes and filter to clean and, sometimes, cleaing the sensors that may have dust buildup. The entire process takes no more than 2 minutes and, even though it sounds like a pain, will hopefully keep Roomba problem free for a long time. I can find no fault with the Roomba right now. I might even consider purchasing a second and third one for the other parts of the house. I suppose I can move Roomba to the back rooms on the first floor or the upstairs but that would require too much effort on my part! I am also considering the Scooba for my kitchen and bathrooms but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I might wait for the next generation to see if the bugs have been worked out of the current models. Also, if Irobot ever invented one, I would jump at the chance to get a robot that will shampoo carpets! Maybe we will see one soon.. ***Update 11/19/2007*** Ran into my first problem with Roomba this past week. The side brush snapped off and I was unable to put it back on. Knowing that these brushes need to be replaced from time to time I decided to order some replacements. Finding them on the Roomba site and ordering them was easy. Problem is that I was informed that they are on backorder for 4 to 6 weeks!! I e-mailed support and they responsed asking me for my mailing address, Roomba number and where I purchased it from. They stated they needed this so they could send me a replacement brush (a free replacement brush). I sent them the information with the hopes that they have some spare brushes ready to ship out but was then informed that it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it out to me. So in the end, I am stuck waiting for about $75 worth of brushes that I ordered as well as the free side brush they are sending me for at least 4 weeks. The good news is that Roomba still does her thing but the corners and edges of walls are somewhat neglected without the side brush. I would still recommend Roomba to those who are thinking about it. Just be forwarned that “due to extremely high demand” replacement parts, including brushes, are currently on backorder for the 500 series. ******Final Update 1/25/2008******* Thought I’d give one final update now that I have been using Roomba for several months. I am still a believer that Roomba can keep your floors clean but it does take a bit more effort than some people will think. I will try my best to break down the cons for Roomba as the pros are pretty straight forward. You get very clean floors without having to pick up a vaccum. My floors have never looked or felt cleaner and this goes for both the hard wood floors and the area rugs. Now for the cons (none of which would make me rethink my purchase but I thought it would be informative to those who are still waiting on buying one) 1. Although Roomba does her thing once I hit the clean button, there is still some maintenance that is required. Emptying the dirt bin after each cleaning cycle and keeping the brushes clean have actually been a bit more work that originally described. I have a dog who sheds and the hair gets wrapped around some of the brushes. The tool that is provided in the box to clean the brushes does little to help with this. I find it eaiser to get a pair of scissors and carefully cut the wrapped dog hair off the brushes. For those of you who don’t want to get your hands dirty, please keep this in mind! 2. The side brushes break fairly easy. One of the comments I saw in my review is that Irobot now ships some rubber bumpber that helps with this. I haven’t looked into getting this yet but I suggest that if you don’t have one on yours (like me), be prepared to replace the side brush often. I was able to get a free replacement on my first one but haven’t gone back for a second yet. 3. The scheduling aspect of Roomba is useless for me. Because I have a 1 year old who has every toy in the history of toys, I find I need to do a complete sweep of the rooms before Roomba does her thing. If Roomba hits one of these toys, the sensor doesn’t always pick up on it and it will try and go over the toy. This usually results in Roomba shutting down until you restart it. Leaving it on schedule means I need to clean up before it goes off. Its just easier for me to set it off manually when I want it to clean. 4. Noise – While quiter than a vaccum, Roomba can still be rather loud. Unless your house is very large, expect the noise to create a bothersome sound if you are watching TV on the same floor or if you are trying to sleep. You will hear it. 5. Auto Docking – Can’t seem to figure this one out. Half the time Roomba docks itself with no problem. The other half it wanders around aimlessly with the docking light blinking just a few feet from the station yet it completely ignores it. I’ve cleaned the sensors and it still does it. I guess it just has a mind of its own sometimes. 6. One minor cleaning issue – Roomba will sometimes leave a big dust ball on the edge of an area rug when it is transitioning from a hard wood floor to the rug. It appears that the dust ball is wrapped around the brushes at one point but gets pulled off by the edge of the rug when it takes that tiny little step up from the floor. If Roomba goes back over that area, great! dust ball gone. If not, your stuck with a dust ball that you have to pick up (again, for me not a big deal but for those that don’t want to get their hands dirty….) None of these complaints or even the sum of them all give me enough reason to question my purchase. Since 95% of the dirt is removed including under furniture (which frankly, I never cleaned prior to Roomba!) these minor issues really don’t amount to much in my opinion. Yes, it can be rather disgusting to clean the brushes when they get clogged and I need to make sure all toys are off the floor but that all translates into a very clean house! Keeps the wife happy!! I’ll check comments from time to time so if anyone has any additional questions, just drop them in and I will try and help. ********One More Update – May 20, 2008************** Had to post this as it has been somewhat of a minor/major issue with my Roomba. The side brush that spins around has not been the best design I’ve ever seen. I’ve mentioned that it has broken off before and Irobot sent me some free replacements. Well, this continues to be a problem. It seems that the side brush likes to get caught on things like corners or furniture which then causes it to break off or snap off an arm. I contacted Irobot about it again asking if they could send me some of those rubber bumbers one person mentioned in the comments section. The response was that they found the rubber bumber to have little to no impact on the side brush so they are no longer using them. They did send me 3 additional brushes at no charge (thank you very much) but this won’t fix the design problem of the brush itself. So I caution people here that are looking to purchase this robot that do not want to fork over additional money for new brushes every coupole of months. I’m Ok with it because I just consider the brushes to be the cost of vacuum bags (and the free ones don’t hurt either!) but in this economy, some people might not have the money to pick these up when they need replacing. I sitll love my Roomba because of the great job it does and the fact it covers areas I could never reach. In fact, I now have a Scooba to wash my floors and love the job that does as well (although that has an entire other set of issues!!) *****Update November 8, 2009***** Oh boy! Changed my rating down to 3 stars. For the last few months, I noticed that Roomba was not picking up as much stuff as before. I changed brushes. cleaned it, took it apart and cleaned it but it still wasn’t picking up anything. All I was getting was balls of dust being left behind. Went online to find some ideas and followed a few tricks and found that my brushes were not moving. Upon trying everything under the sun to get this working, the end result is the the cleaning head module (CHD) has died. Great news, however, is that Irobot sells these for $49.99!!! Yay, I get to spend even more money to keep Roomba running. I am beginning to believe that the 560 model I bought was the beta version since the side brush and now the entire CHD have been redesigned. Yes, you heard that right, the CHD I decided to order is a redesign that apparently fixes the issues that the original one had. Since I am in this for so much money already, what’s another $49.99? The original cost was about $380 plus another $100 or so on replacement brushes plus this $50 brings my total to the cost of a high end Dyson vaccuum. Well, at least it does a great job when it is running. While I love Roomba when it is working, I am finding the the cost and effort required to keep it running (the constant cleaning and taking it apart)might be too much for most people. I’ve read all the forums out there and the problems I have had are very common. And since Irobot keeps redesigning this piece by piece, I assume they are aware of all the issues as well. Hopefully, by the time I am done putting all the new pieces together, I will have a Roomba that will last for a long time before breaking down. I understand that technology requires maintenance and repair but 2 years should not be considered the life cycle of a vaccuum. I guess gadgets of today are not made as well as they were “back in the day” as my parents woudl say. I will update once I get my new CHD and let everyone know how it works. ****Another Update 11/23/2009****** I got my new cleaning head module and it looks like Irobot has fixed the issues where dirt and paet hair could get stuck in the motor. Only time will tell if this will last but it is doing a great job for me again. HOWEVER….my battery would not hold a charge for longer than 30 minutes and all attempts to “fix” it per the forums and tech support failed. The end result was a new battery purchase..yes, more money spent. rather than buy directly from Irobot, I decided to pick up a generic one sold here on amazon. I believe I paid about $65 for a generic battery that is equal to the $99 battery on the Irobot store. It is supposed to last longer than the stock battery but I haven’t noticed much of a difference in the 2 Roomba runs since I got it. So my Roomba is happily working again, just in time for the holidays, and I am hoping that I am done replacing faulty designed parts. I must be right??? ******Maybe my Final Update?? 1/7/2011******* Its been a while since my last update to this review. I guess that is because I haven’t had any issues since I replaced the cleaning head module and battery in late 2009. The newer white side brushes seem to stay in place, the newer style brushes don’t get as clogged as the old ones and my battery (an aftermarket brand) gives me a good hour and forty five minutes (or more) before it needs a charge. I now have a 1 year old boy to go along with my 4 year boy so my house is in pretty rough shape after the two of them are done destroying it. So I am routinely running Roomba around those play areas so I can avoid bringing out the big vacuum. It has worked well…knock on wood! I think I have nothing more to say! (unless of course something else breaks!)

iRobot 560 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, Black and Silver (Kitchen) We have two Roombas plus a Scooba in our house. When one of the batteries on one of our Roombas finally reached the end of its life cycle, we decided to donate that Roomba to a friend and to get ourselves the new top of the line – the Roomba 560. We got this right when it first came out, but we waited several months before posting a review. It’s pretty much impossible to review one of these Roombas after only a few days! It takes weeks if not months to start to see how well they last over time, and what breaks down. Believe me – been there, done that. So now it’s many months later, and I have to say, we are quite pleased with the improvements of this Roomba over the previous generations of Roombas. So first, for those who don’t even have ANY Roomba yet (hard to believe!). Roombas are awesome. We have cats, and we work from home so we’re home all day. It is AMAZING how much dirt and dust and junk collects in the carpet every single day. Who really has time to vacuum their carpets twice a day any more? With the Roomba, you set the scheduler to do it while you are asleep. You wake up in the morning, the carpets are clean, the air is fresh, and you empty out the dust bin. It is just wonderful. Even those without pets might be amazed how much lint and such the Roomba will find every morning for you. I have a noise meter and have done several tests with the noise meter. The Roomba is much quieter than other regular vacuums. It is NOT silent – it can’t be! How could it vacuum up dirt and be silent? But it is quieter than the alternatives, and heck, you’re sleeping anyway. I can easily sleep through a Roomba running. Now, on to the improvements of this new Roomba over previous models. First, it has a cool feature where the speed drops when it senses it is approaching a solid object. The old Roomba would just run full tilt into an object – wall, couch etc. – and then turn around. This one slows down so that it hits the object gently. Sure the old Roomba wouldn’t dent the walls with its powerful force, but still, it’s nice to have it be gentle on furniture and your building. Next, for better or for worse, the new Roomba is much more aware of when its bin and brushes are getting grungy. I admit I didn’t clean my other Roombas as often as I should have. And it led to problems. This new Roomba will actually stop and warn you when it’s getting full and when the brushes should be cleaned. If you’re a procrastinator like I am, this is a good thing. If you’re a clean freak that empties the bin every time, and cleans the brushes every time, then you probably won’t even notice this feature. The anti tangle technology is nice. The previous Roomba would start to eat a cord and just keep going until it was really stuck. This Roomba at least tries to get itself untangled. Still, I don’t recommend leaving cords and strings and things lying around. You’re just asking for trouble if you do. The new system uses a “lighthouse” instead of just a wall. With a lighthouse, you mark out a room so the Roomba finishes with that room completely before going on to the next room. They are like section markers. We tend to just use walls, but if you have two large rooms the lighthouse feature might be really helpful for you. After several months of running we have had NO problems at all with our Roomba. No broken brushes, no falling off pieces, nothing. It is still going strong and we are very pleased with it. Highly, highly recommended! I am happy to give personal advice and I even have videos of Roombas on my website. I love Roombas, they have saved me countless hours of work, and they make my home a much cleaner and easier-breathing place to be.
